Zed IndustriesAboutTeamValuesJobsBrandOur VisionWe’re Zed Industries, a small and passionate team with a vision for building the world’s best text editor—for you, and for your team. Zed isn’t our first editor. It’s the culmination of more than a decade of experience building tools for developers. We created the hackable text editor, Atom, and the pioneering software platform that launched an entirely new generation of desktop apps, Electron. We also built Tree-sitter, an advanced syntax parsing framework used by the most popular editors in the world. Building tools that matter is in our DNA. Now, we’re building something new again with that same drive and a new vision. We believe the best software is handcrafted, with unparalleled attention to detail. We believe software development is better when it’s a shared experience. We believe there’s a better way to write software—and this is just the start of the adventure. We think there's a better way to write code, and it starts with the following assumptions. Mission-critical tools should be hyper-responsive When you move the cursor or type a character, you should see pixels on the next refresh of your display—every time. Even sub-perc

Delta is now in public beta. Replacing pull requests is our first step toward replacing GitHub.

作者: Nathan Sobo語言: en
索引內容摘要

Today, we're launching the public beta of Delta, a multiplayer environment for coding with agents and reviewing what they build. We're building Delta because agents have fundamentally changed the way we write software, but our collaborative tooling isn't keeping up. Last week, we crossed a key milestone: we disabled pull requests on Delta's own repository. We now build and collaborate on Delta entirely within Delta. Pull Requests are seriously turned off. What makes Delta different from traditional workflows is that collaboration doesn't depend on committing and pushing code. You invite teammates directly into your conversations with agents. When someone joins your thread, they see the same worktrees you do and can work with them on their own machine. Teammates can ask the same agent why you chose a Mutex instead of an RwLock. If you log off, they can keep working with the agent where you left off. Starting today, anyone can download Delta for macOS, Linux, or Windows, use it on the web without downloading anything, and keep up with threads from a mobile browser on the go. Richard Feldman walks through an end-to-end flow in Delta: fixing an issue, getting a teammate's review, and m

In the realm of software development, a text editor is not just a tool, but an extension of the programmer. Like martial artists who maneuver their swords with precision and grace, programmers wield their text editors, slicing through lines of text with deliberate intention. Consider this guide your dojo, a place where you'll hone your skills in the fine art of text manipulation. We'll start with the basics of navigation and selection before embarking on a series of practical exercises. You'll be given some text, a goal for transforming that text, and guidance on where to find the necessary text manipulation commands for the task at hand. Solutions to the exercises will be provided in the form of screen capture videos, alongside detailed breakdowns of the commands used, allowing you to follow along and deepen your understanding. Let's get into the basics of navigating and selecting. Today we're introducing Delta, a multiplayer environment for coding with agents and reviewing what they build, and we're inviting the first users into our private beta. Delta keeps code and conversations connected, so developers and agents can work together with the full context of how the code came to be. Delta, a multiplayer environment for coding with agents and reviewing what they build. Delta is the second half of a plan we've been executing for years: to build the best place to write code, then make it the best place to talk about code. When we first started out, not everyone understood why you'd want to have a conversation inside your IDE. Then came agents, and now talking about code is how software gets written. To support our collaborative vision, we built DeltaDB, which replicates the conversation and the worktree together, in real time, for everyone in a thread. DeltaDB works with the git repository you already have. Every edit and conversation is captured between your commits. You can commit and push like you always did, and teammates who never open Delta see a normal git repo. We could have added DeltaDB to Zed, and eventually we will. But the best possible experience

Ted Nelson specified the docuverse sixty years ago. The technology finally arrived, and so did its native users.

作者: Nathan Sobo語言: en
索引內容摘要

Ted Nelson has been on my mind a lot this year. Nelson was a pioneer in computing, and in 1965 he coined the word hypertext as part of the project that would define his career: Project Xanadu. With Xanadu, he had a specific vision of what computing could be, which he called the docuverse. He imagined a system that could keep every version of a document; hypertext links would know both their source and destination, and quotations would be kept by reference (rather than copy) so any included text maintained its identity and source. Everything, in this version of computing, would be intertwingled and xanalogical. We're talking about attribution down to the span. To be xanalogical is to follow two rules: Never copy, always reference (also known by a Nelsonism, transclusion). Never overwrite, always version. As Nelson designed it, Xanadu would manage the system's complexity and massive bookkeeping burden itself, so users only experienced the benefits of a system that could never forget. The vision of unlimited bookkeeping requires the reality of unlimited storage and a future-proof naming scheme, neither of which existed for the decades that Nelson worked on Xanadu.
